What is UCMR 5?
The Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) is an initiative by the EPA to monitor public drinking water for the occurrence of specific contaminants. The data collected regarding the exposure and occurrence of these contaminants is used to help improve regulatory decisions that affect public health. UCMR 5 is the fifth upcoming rule.
How do i chose A UCMR 5 Approved Lab?
The EPA requires public water systems (PWSs) to use EPA approved laboratories. To receive EPA approval for UCMR 5, laboratories must successfully complete the EPA’s rigorous lab approval program, demonstrating their ability to meet UCMR 5 methods and guidelines. Since the inception of the program, Babcock Laboratories has been the industry’s trusted laboratory for UCMR testing services. In fact, Babcock Labs was one of the select few laboratories to take part in the EPA's research process concerning the development of reporting limits for various UCMR 5 methods.
Who does UCMR 5 Affect?
Starting in 2023, large public water systems who serve 10,000 or more people will be required to sample. For the first time, medium-sized public water systems serving 3,300 to 10,000 people will be required to sample. A representative number of small public water systems serving fewer than 3,300 will also need to sample.
when will ucmr 5 happen?
The EPA plans to finalize UCMR 5 regulations required under the Safe Drinking Water Act by the end of 2021. Monitoring will begin in 2023 and take place at the PWS drinking water entry points.
